These days, a Medan Tour Package wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Ambarita Village. This is undeniable, as Huta Siallagan remains a tourism icon on Samosir Island for both domestic and international tourists.

Culture

Any discussion of Huta Ambarita is inevitably linked to the history of Samosir Island in North Sumatra. Located in Simanindo District, this village offers a perfect blend of the enchanting natural beauty of Lake Toba and the rich culture of the Batak Toba people.

Batak Toba culture is deeply rooted in cultural values and carries an air of mystery. Ambarita is widely known as the “Village of Stone Chairs” due to its megalithic relics, which stand as silent witnesses to the governance and judicial systems of the past.

The History

The heart of Ambarita Village is Huta Siallagan, a traditional Batak settlement surrounded by stone walls (known as batu parik) that served as a defensive fortress. Within this complex lies the most famous relic: the Stone Court Chair (Batu Parsidangan).

The site is divided into two main areas that illustrate the judicial process during the reign of King Siallagan:

Batu Parsidangan I (Meeting and Courtroom)

This is the first area where the king, advisors (datu), and traditional elders gathered for meetings or to try someone accused of a serious crime (such as murder, theft, or rape).

The site consists of chairs and a table, all carved from stone. This is where the defendant would be tried. If found guilty, they would be taken to the execution area.

Batu Parsidangan II (Execution Site)

Located a few meters from the first area, this site was where criminals were beheaded.

According to stories passed down through generations, before being executed, the condemned prisoner would first be shackled and tortured. It is said that certain parts of the prisoner’s body would be eaten by the king and the nobles. This was not based on cannibalism due to starvation, but rather a ritual to strengthen the king’s tondi (spirit or spiritual power).

In this area, there is a long stone execution platform (parbale-balean) and stone statues representing the king, the executioner, and the condemned.

Interesting Places

In addition to the legendary Stone Chair, Ambarita also offers other attractions that should be included in the Samosir Tour Package:

Bolon Traditional House: Within Huta Siallagan and around the village, you’ll find the Bolon House, a magnificent traditional Batak Toba dwelling with soaring roofs and distinctive carvings (gorga) rich in philosophical meaning.

Ancient Kings’ Tombs: Not far from Huta Siallagan lies an ancient burial complex of the Siallagan clan leaders, adding to the village’s historical ambiance.

The Beauty of Lake Toba’s Scenery: Located right on the lake’s edge, Ambarita offers views of the clear blue lake waters against a backdrop of green hills. The atmosphere is peaceful and perfect for relaxing.

Craft and Souvenir Center: Along the village’s main street, there are many shops selling Ulos cloth, wood carvings, sculptures, and various other traditional Batak souvenirs.
